Manuel Antonio, speedos, monkeys, and sloths AND learning to swim!

Alan picked us up Friday around 2pm. We loaded up a few things and headed off for Manuel Antonio. It started raining shortly after getting the car for the 3 hour drive to the beach. We stopped part way through to see some crocs. People walk along a bridge to see the crocs. As Alan put it, it is kind of a dangerous tourist attraction. When a semi truck would fly past us, we literally had to hold on for dear life. The umbrellas shook- Kiera nearly lost hers to the river below the first time one flew by. Fun to see crocs in their natural habitat close up!

Sully was of course giddy bey0ond belief. “Wook Papa, wook, cacadile!” We then headed back to the car to finish our drive. When we got to Quepos we bought a few groceries and went in search of lodging. Martin remembered one place from the last time he was there 12 years ago- unfortunately it was full. They gave us a recommendation, but it too was full. We were hungry, tired, cranky, and just plain sick of traveling by this point. We landed upon a place called Coca Beach. The name was much nicer then the hotel itself. The other two hotels we stayed at on the trip were fresh and modern while this one was dingy and an OSHA nightmare to say the least. It did however have sufficient beds for us all and come morning we found out it had a great view.

P8192039

Saturday morning: way too early to be awake. Another fun morning adventure with early riser Sully.

Kiera awoke around 6:30 ready to head to the beach!

P8202062

We were beach bound by 7am to hopefully miss the afternoon rain, picked up some bread at the panaderia, and headed to the national park/beach called Manuel Antonio. We paid our $10.00 admission fee with a whole slough of Spaniards and Italians and started the hike to the beach. The trail was flat and wide and was about a mile long. It was early enough in the morning that the sun wasn’t over many of the trees— I think we have all sweat enough to last us a while!

P8202066

Upon reaching the beach Kiera and Sully decided to have a crab race. I think they each one 2 races:)

P8202068

After the crazy waves in Guanacaste, it was nice to have a calmer beach. The beach was in the shape of a C so the brunt of the waves had died down by the time they reached shore.

Mama and daughter. We were searching for fairy and mermaid hideouts in the shells and rocks that we found.

Tio Alan and Martin enjoying their time in the shade after some shim boarding. There was crazy raccoon that kept trying to grab our food (the first time it ran off with a precious pack of Ritz crackers. We certainly didn’t bring enough food for half of it to get dragged off into the woods!) We moved all the food into one pack and put a skim board and large piece of drift wood on top to attempt to deter him… it didn’t.

Bummer- almost made the trek back to the car without getting wet.

P8202177

Upon leaving the beach we went in search of one thing—- FOOD~! Each casado (typical plate) is generally delicious and this plate was no exception!

Driving back to the hotel (10Kilometers from the resturant we ate at) we saw a sloth on the side of the road! Crazy looking things!

P8202187

Martin bought the kids a little carton of vainilla chips (chocolate chip equivalent)— we stopped for so long to admire the sloth a lot of the ice cream melted. Sully, however, thoroughly enjoyed every lick!

P8202193

P8212232

Getting a fresh fruit smoothie before heading off to San Jose. WE stopped in Jaco for a quick beach walk and casado plate.

P8212235

Alan works in the rice industry in Costa Rica. He stopped a field that was being processed. We pulled over and he gave a the rice low down. Essentially a tractor pulls the rice kernels off the plants and then the tractor fills the truck with the kernels to be brought to a factory to be processed.

P8212236

Full of rice!

P8212237

It was very cool to see the process!

P8212239

The sun was shining so bright and it was too hot for blankets- so Mama’s hat it was.

P8212242

Last winter this river spilled over it’s banks for flooded the area for miles. People’s homes and businesses were totally submerged for days. Many people died and people lost ALL of their belongings. (No, there is no such thing as home owners insurance down here.)

P8212243

AND, after some crazy winter downpour, we made it back to Aserri in time to have some beans and rice and head to bed. This morning we hoped on a bus at 8am and were picked up by Laura of Grecia. We are with her family in their beautiful home. Pictures and stories to come. One week from tonight almost to the hour we will be back in the States!

Museo de los ninos

We headed to the children’s museum yesterday via bus. Here is our little adventure.

P8181980

Classic picture that shows Sully and Isaac’s personalities. Taking a break in a central park to wait for Papa and Diddie.

P8181981

Here they come. Somehow I thought it would be a good idea to have Kiera only bring one pair of flip flops to “save space” in her suitcase. After 4.5 weeks of straight walking I would say the old navy flip flops have served their purpose. We bought a new pair 2 weeks ago at the local department store but they broke the next day. Hopefully we will have better luck this time. We spent a whopping equivalent of $3.00.

P8181982

Walking past a bus stop.

P8181984

Nani, Kiera, and Issac wading through the people in the city. We took one bus and then walked many blocks to the museum. Kiera’s little spirit was greatly impacted by the street people. She had lots of questions: What were they doing, why were they on the street, why were they asking for money, why were they so smelly and messy… big questions for a sensitive and compassionate 5 year old to take in. She is processing many things grown adults in the states never have to process.

P8181985

Children’s museum in sight!

P8181987

“I am happy”

P8181988

As with any children’s museum- bus loads of kids on field trips get dropped of. Their school year starts in February.

P8181989

Nearly there!

P8181990

We made it— ironically enough the children’s museum is the old penitentiary. The museum is huge- we were there for hours and didn’t get close to finishing it. The old jails cells were converted into a wide array of exhibits. Some simple, some technological, some in between. So worth the $2.50 for adults and $.75 for kids (Sully was free).

P8181992

P8181994

One of the exhibits— space!

P8181999

A mural depicting the beauty of pre colonial Costa Ricans. I love the freedom to show breasts and privates.

P8182002

In the kitchen!

P8182005

Just in case you didn’t know- the “final product” of the food we consume is poop:)

P8182006

There was helicopter and airplane to tour.

P8182008

Digging up fossils.

P8182009

Dancing. How sweet and simple. Music, mirrors, lights— cheap fun that had Sully occupied for ages! Other exhibit names: Earth, ecosystems, marine life, doctors office and dentist office, human body, technology, radio studio, water and bubbles, bananas and coffee, electricity and magnets, tribute to costa rica, the bank, the police station, art center, light and color, orchestra, music room, construction, playing with numbers and letters, ancient Egypt, aviation, little gym for babes to climb and play on, Once Upon a Time, and a huge play space to rent out for parties with blow up things and a mini park. WOW! We were all exhausted. Just goes to show you don’t have to have a lot of money to make really cool exhibits! AND there were a ton of young staff to answer questions.

P8182012

It was raining when we left so we ran as fast as we could to the bus stop (15 minute run). Of course it stopped raining halfway through— we didn’t end up getting to wet. Here is Sully making use of the bus ride to Dona Roxy’s house for dinner of beans, rice, chicken, broccoli salad with lime mayonnaise, and ice cream!

A sweet day! Thanks Nani!

An early birthday celebration

Beautiful Vilma a few days shy of her birthday!!! We did not know our plans on her actual birthday so we took her out to breakfast in San Jose to celebrate-

P8192026

Walking to the bus stop- vacas in the background.

P8192017

Eating a typical breakfast in downtown. Pinto (bean and rice mixture), eggs, bread, and coffee.

P8192018

There is quite the fashion culture here. Women and girls of all ages go out, even to the grocery store, in high heels. Kiera has taken notice. We were walking by one of the numerous shoe stores (downtown there are several per block) and Kiera fell in love with a white glittery pair. She is a beautiful girl- inside and out:)

P8192022

Striking a pose. 5 going on 15…

P8192024

5 going on… 5… a “big” girl snuggled up close to her Papa on the bus ride back to Aserri. Her heart is so tender. I have to admit that I couldn’t finish writing this post. I started crying, in part because I found out my dear friend had a baby girl and in part because our little girl is growing up, little by little. The time flies by so quickly— Wow….

Mother’s Day and Montezuma

Monday was Mother’s Day in Costa Rica:)

Sully passed out quickly once we left Santa Theresa. We headed down the road a ways and stopped and asked for directions. We were told we had to turn around because the road to Montezuma was not passable because of the rivers flooding on the road.

P8151944

P8151946

Montezuma is a bit more “built up” then Santa Theresa. Reminds me of my previous travels- backpacks, fun people, and adventures. Not much has changed today except I have traded the backpack for a suitcase- the fun people and adventures remain.

P8151950

P8151951

We started up the rocky path to the waterfall—- but didn’t get very far. Too much water, not safe. Water swollen river 1, Parents with kids 0.

P8151953

Sully and Amanda making their way back to the car.

P8151954

The sky was acting like it was going to rain— we trudged down the beach with our lunch items anyway. Pretty beach- very rocky, crazy waves.

P8151956

Fun little pockets of rocks for the kids to play on.

P8151958

P8151959

Refried bean and veggie tuna sandwich with fresh papaya. YUM.

P8151960

P8151964

We packed up, made our way to the car and went in search of some agua dulce. We asked a few hotels but with no luck. We drove back into Cabano and had some luck. We washed up and made our way back to the car to get to the ferry to take us to Punta Arenas- a one hour ferry ride that would safe us 5 hours of driving. Sounded like a good plan to me. Long story short- tico time ruled and we didn’t make it to the ferry on time. With the kids again asleep in the car we turned up the music for our long ride. Shortly after driving we came to a fork in the road- I took the opportunity to pee in the rain (pouring rain) behind a truck. I ran back to the car and was instructed to once again ask directions from the guy behind us. The soaking wet gringa that just peed behind (sort of) the truck went running up to the car. I asked if we were going the right way. He asked why we didn’t take the ferry and I just chuckled. He said, follow me. So follow him we did! He flew down the road, signaling with his blinkers or flashers for every possible thing- biker on side of the road, one lane bridge, etc. Did I mention how fast we were going? This guy flew down the road. It was gravel but in much better shape then the previous day’s roads. We made the first leg of the trip in one hour and twenty minutes (Walter predicted it would take us 2.5 hours!) At dark we came to the turn where the guy was going to leave us. We thanked him and asked what he does. I work for rent a car, driving vehicles from place to place. AH, that makes sense. He was in a rent a car so he didn’t care if he beat the hell out of the car and because he assumed the gringa was in a rent a car, that we wouldn’t care if we beat the hell out of our car. Alas, we weren’t in a rent a car, but we did make good timing! We stopped for a typical dinner around 9pm and continued our journey to San Jose. We made it safe and sound and all very glad to be in bed. What a weekend full of adventure it was!

P8161969

The remains of the good time!

P8161970

Rainy rainy Tuesday morning- Kiera and Issac watching Jorge el Curioso.

P8161972

Abuelo giving Sully a little ride. Emilio was coming back from a hour and a half bike ride (he’s 82!).

Not sure what the rest of the week will bring. We have less then two weeks until we leave- time will fly!

“Trabs” and going with the flow.

Monday morning Sully woke up again at 5:00— I decided to get up with him and go to the beach.

Sully beach bound.

P8151903

Seat belt birdie?

P8151905

The low tide waves kept bringing tons of crabs to shore. Sully was giddy with excitement.

P8151909

A few of the live ones he collected. “Trabs mine house?” I explained that they had to stay with their mama. His response. “Ok Mama, love their Mama.”

P8151912

“No picture Huddy.”

P8151919

Another river meets the ocean location. Mega fun for Sul!

P8151926

P8151921

P8151936

P8151939

Sully and I headed back, made some eggs, hotdog, mayonnaise, and refried bean sandwiches and took a dip in the little pool. Both the kids loved jumping into the water! We then packed up our few things and headed in search of waterfalls about 40km down the road. A goodbye glimpse of Santa Theresa.
