goodbyes, Poas, and happy birthdays in Guatemala.

How time flies! We are now half done with our trip, heading to Guatemala tomorrow.

On Saturday we had a grand barbeque to celebrate Edgar and my birthdays. You wouldnt believe the array of meat grilled by martin. Nearly all the family was present as we rocked out to music, danced and joked around till late in the evening. It was beautiful and festive, truly enjoyed by all.

We said our goodbyes and deepest thanks early Monday morning to head to Grecia, Alajuela. It is a clean, modest town surrounded by sugar cane farms. We are here visiting another friend who studied abroad in Duluth years ago, believe it or not, and her family. Laura and Eric have two children, Sebastian and Mariana. They are both so sweet and loving to Kiera. It has been a joy to see them interact together. They drag her around and show her off to everyone they know saying ¨mira la macha, que linda verdad?¨ (look at the blondie, isn´t she cute?). Everyone continues to be infatuated with the little blonde socialite.

Laura took us to visit Volcan Poas today. A beautiful drive up the mountain through deep green forrest, sugar cane farms, and ferns/flower farms that export all over the world. Once through the park gates, everyone is asked to park their cars facing out so that in the event of an erruption people could escape quickly since Poas is still an active volcano. The last significant activity happened nearly two years ago, spewing sulfuric gasses and hot air, closing the park down for a few days. Fortunately we had no such luck!we had a decent hike up to the crater viewing area. The summit was clear and we could see all to the bottom of the crater. The water is a cloudy green and is masked by the steam spewing from its vent. We also hiked the Lagoon Loop taking us past an ancient crater filled with rain water.

Tomorrow I will be celebrating my 25th birthday. It feels much older and much more mature than 24… tomorrow we will also be flying to Guatemala. A place near and dear to my heart. A place I once was when I was 19. Wow, how time changes things!

More volcanoes, culture and beans and rice await us in Guatemala.

No new pictures, as we are on dial up internet. Anyone remember that?

Paz a todos!

A glimpse of heaven…

We spent the early morning and afternoon at another beach called Playa Panama. It was a beautiful site, few people, and lots of birds, crustaceans, sand, and sun. Kiera and Martin took a long nap in a hammock strung between two trees, I enjoyed a long walk on the beach, and we all enjoyed some fresh bread, tuna, and watermelon. We are grateful to Edgar Andres and Meli for taking such good care of us while we are guests in their home.

In the evening we went to Aquas Termales, hot springs. This is where we got a glimpse of heaven. Pool after pool of hot water (ranging from really hot to perfect bathtub temp), complete with a water slide, waterfall, and all. If the jury was still out about whether or not Kiera is fearless, we have made our decision. Last night her favorite word was MORE MORE MORE. More water-slide (ALL BY HERSELF….), More submersing herself completely into the water, more jumping and more running. A picture could never capture how happy she was last night. She squealed and laughed the whole night. As parents it is so amazing to see your child so happy, so content, so filled with life. Yup, I would say it was a great day.

Early morning Sandia

P3260722

Every morning Kiera wakes up, first asking for ¨friends¨ then fruit or nummies. So we dress and head out to the patio for a early morning snack. This time it just so happens to be Kiera´s preferred, wa´mellon.

We are in Liberia at the moment and happen to have internet connection at the house we are staying at and will up date this blog once we have all our photos uploaded and current on the flickr site.

Also thought you should know that it is somewhere around 85 degrees and blazing sun today and have spent the morning at the beach… The water was clear blue and green, the sand was fine and light, and the sun shone high. The hillside is dotted with million dollar villas. They say this area within 20 years will be the new Haiwi. Mixed feelings by locals if that is good or bad. We spent this beautiful playa time with Meli and Lu. Lu is almost three, a spit fire of a girl who really enjoys playing with Kiera. What luck to have so many kids right around Kiera´s age!

Martin finally got to eat his ceviche. This particular batch was called vuele a la vida (return to life) and it certainly did that. Chalk full of octupus, fish, shrimp, conch, and flavorfull spices. Quite a delicacy! The Vegas have a pass to enter this particular beach which is signified by Martins wristband.

Not sure what tomorrow will bring. More beach, rumors of hot springs at night. Should be good!

Semana Santa, Sarah Gallo, Bobby Banano, y sin frenos

P3240616

It has been a while and we appologize. Semana Santa was last week and the country nearly shuts down while everyone gets the week off to celebrate the Easter. We get to internet as often as we can, we promise! PHOTOS, we now have photos… Thanks to Martins amazing techie skills (which is why we have photos after ONLY 2 and a half weeks…) but of course we are on vaction after all.

Since we last wrote, we prepared for an extended vacation to Puerto Limon in the Limon province on the Eastern coast of Costa Rica. It is the transfer station for thousands of Dole and Del Monte banana and pineapple containers that were getting ready to be shipped off to the US and beyond. It is quite an amazing site to see containers stacked 6 high and covering acres of land all awaiting either a ship or a truck to haul them around the world.

We spent the week in Limon on the farm of and Tio (uncle) Villalobos. The live in a small village called Las Brisas and have 40 acres and 40 cattle, which they milk every morning so that the aunt can make many differnent fresh cheeses. They also sell eggs from their chickens and fruits (guava, gauyaba, sweet lemon, guanabana…) from the various trees within their property along with the leftover milk.

One of the days we had the “pleasure” of helping slay a chicken for lunch. It´s a long story but sarah got dubbed the name Sarah Gallo (Sarah Rooster) because when she was disgustedly holding the chicken in a bucket at an arms distance, Walter snuck up behind her and poked her sides. Sarah let out a squawk and everyone burst into laughter and almost crying… it is a name that she will never be able to live down!

The Villalobos have a simple life only 45 minutes from some beautiful Caribbean beaches. One of which we visited called Cahuita which is located within an national park and next to a little beach town of the same name. We were lucky to see a howler monkey as we entered the park. The weather wasnt the greatest, cloudy rainy and a little sun but it sure beats the 100 degree days they are used to. It made it more easier to spend the entire day on the beach.  Kiera loved the waves so much. The pictures will say it all! www.flickr.com/thesawinskis

Sapprissa played again against Adelante (mexico) and won almost effortlessly for those who follow futbol. Martin, Edgar, Walter and Priscilla went down the mountain to watch the game at a cousins house. While Nani, Nahomi, Issac, Sarah, Kiera and Villalobos all managed the farm. It is a good thing that we rented cars because what Ticos call a road we call offroad 4×4. It never ceases to amaze how well theTicos can drive and the roads they are able to manuver (mainly out of necessity and no other options). It definitely puts our potholes and ugly roads to shame. If only we owned a rally car would martin be in heaven.

On Sunday we headed off to see Volcan Irazu which is in Cartago to the East. We had to make a stop at the Basilica so that Walter and Priscilla could thank the Virgin Mary for finally blessing them with a child. They found out that morning that one is on the way after a year of trying along with many false positives.

 P3230584

We then drove for what seemed like hours up the side of a mountain to visit Volcan Irazu. When we arrived they wanted to charge the Gringos $10 per head plus parking and tax while only $2 for the Ticos. The park was only open for another hour and disgusted at the difference in fees, Walter bargained our entrance fee down from 22 dollars to 4, not bad! The clouds were so thick that could could see the volcanoe but the trip was worth it. We waited at the edge of the crater, taking turns blowing until dizzy, hoping to move the clouds. Just as we were leaving the wind shifted and pushed the clouds out of the crate and we could see it all. Beautiful indeed!

On the way back down the mountain we stopped at a Linda Vista Restaurant for a late lunch. The walls adorned with foreign money, notes, business cards and even underware. We continued on our way home down the mountainside and just as we reached the base, we lost our brakes… not the best thing to happen on the side of a mountain. Aftering using the emergency (rightly named) brake and waiting for a hour for the brakes to cool down, they were back to the race to San Jose.

Tomorrow we are heading to Liberia, Guanacaste to visit Edgar Andres and familyfor a few days and hopefully be able to see some more beaches.  It is a 4+ hour bus ride but as luck has it we will be hitching a ride with another friend of his! Allan Cascante works Tuesdays to Fridays in Liberia. We are excited to visit some more beautiful beaches and see more beautiful country side in CRs northern province.

Kiera is still doing great! Despite all the changes she is experiencing she continues to be a trooper. Her¨go with the flow¨attitude is the only way we are doing what we are doing. Everyone still loves the linda machita (little blondie)! It has been really fun seeing Kiera and Isaac interact. They live worlds apart, speak different languages, are exposed to different things, yet they are SO similar. It really is a beautiful thing, we are all humans regardless of where in this world we live!

Our smooth sailing continues… mas o menos

The music concert Martin and I went to on Saturday was AMAZING. Martin and I, Kassia and Douglas, and Nani and Edgar all piled into a car and headed up a mountain. We drove and drove and managed to find a parking spot, conveniently on a hill steeper and muddier than any hill in Duluth. We started walking to some unknown destination and the rain began to fall. Along the way we were guided by the pulsing beat of ethnic music. There were swarms of anxious people waiting to discover the location of this concert. We continued walking and walking through the forest, up and down the mountain side until reaching a break in the forest and BAM… there it was. Thousands of people, a HUGE stage, a forest lit with green and blue lights, food, drinks, fire dancers, and thumping music. We arrived at 7pm and left around 2am where amazing music (from african to techno, to traditional costa rican, you name it, it was played) was played. The concert was appropriately called Mundo Loco, crazy world.

When we arrived home we were met by Doña Vilma who watched Kiera all day. She said she did magically, no problems at all. We heard a “hi” from her room and went in to greet her. She greeted us with a bed full of vomit…… hmmm. It was either the three day old unrefrigerated chicken, the water, who knows. We got her cleaned up and on a light diet the next day and she was back to perfect! She has quite the system!

Monday was our rafting day. The river was so low it certainly couldnt be called whitewater refting, but it was very fun non the less. Our guides name was Pablo and we were in the raft with Carlos and Inez from Spain. We say toucans, bright green and red (poisonous) frogs, and banana and pineapple plants. The day was beautiful with little boughts of cooling rain, fantastic traditional food, and good people. We were very lucky!

Tuesday we hung around the house preparing for our trip today to Limon to visit family of Edgars. We rented a car with Sila )as Kiera calls her) and Walter and will be going in caravan style to the hot hot Carribean coast. I went to the bodega to buy Kiera food, tuna, beans, rice, and fruit (fresh pineapple, bananas and watermelon, doesn´t sound bad, does it?)

Love to all. We will probably write again Monday because all places will be closed for Easter.
