Dona Roxy’s and happy birthday!

20110807-074322.jpg

Headed up the hill to Dona Roxy’s house- Martin first stayed at her house when he came to study in Costa Rica. Kiera went to school with Amanda for the morning so she joined us later. Sully insisted on having his shades and hat on.

Mixed meat rice, creamy bean “soup”, lettuce salad, potato chips, lime flavored mayonnaise, and fresh orange juice. A flan type dessert followed.

Sully doing his morning (and afternoon and night) ritual— digging for crabs. He is obsessed with uncovering one with a little plastic spoon. His hopes are still high even though he hasn’t reached one yet.

Chill day, but not so chilly

We took the day to recoup and rest up from the big beach days. We hung out at the house and met nearly all the kids of Flowers Bay. Courtney has an open door policy. Throughout the day and night there are swarms of kids of all ages that take shelter in her home. The ladies took a trip to the market to squelch Sarah’s hankering for fresh fruit and local market shopping. They arrived back with pineapple, papaya, and oranges. Transportation is simple. Taxis and busses (vans) pass often and a holler or a hand wave will pull them over. 15-20L a time (.75-$1.00)

Kiera’s first attempt at getting her hair “done” was semi successful- her scalp is not used to the pulling and tugging required to make tight braids. The end product was super cute- we’ll see if she wants it done again:)

P7170174

Sully had a sour tummy throughout the night. Today we hope the puking is done. He is resting now and eating a little bit. We think the combination of swallowing salt water and chlorine water was too much for his tender tummy to take.

Island Girl Princess Party

Happy Birthday Nika!

Danika_birthday_girl

Turning 4 on the island is a big deal and especially if you are princess. It was nearly an all day ordeal packed with yummy food and good company.

Courtney hired a bus to pick up some kids and adults and then we headed off to the beach.

We made camp in the shade of palm trees, complete with a table full of food and a piƱata.

P7180279 P7180283

Throughout the day we ate (beans and rice, chicken, potato salad, and white spaghetti), swam, played in the sand, broke a pinata, sang happy birthday, and ate birthday cake AND cupcakes.

We were blessed to be able to spend the day with her and her mommy.

Beach Day and Not Soon Enough

It is difficult to sleep in around here when the sun rises at 530am and it quickly raises the ambient temperature another 5-10 degrees from the muggy 80 we were sleeping in. The rest of the house though seem to be a bit more used to it than us as they were much later to rise.

P7170188

Fed and packed we ventured off in search of the white sands and cerulean seas in West Bay.

(If it isn’t apparent, Martin is hobbling in this picture. Apparently playing basketball in bare Minnesota feet on blistering hot concrete isn’t a good idea. Massive blister? Check! Let the healing begin…)

P7170189

P7170190

Water taxis line the beach waiting to take people from West Bay to the multitude of other beaches lining the island.

P7170191

This is Court’s Sunday place of choice. Bananarama is a beachside hotel of sorts that prides themselves in being eco green. We played for a while in the beautiful water until the jellyfish shooed us out. Kiera now knows how effective vinegar is on jellyfish stings :)
